Out of
control
Minneapolis I
knew my daily schedule was out of control when I found myself attempting
to talk on the telephone, respond to e-mail messages and eat a sandwich
at the same time.
At that moment I felt
deep conviction, as if the Holy Spirit was saying, "Hal, you need
to work less and pray more."
The message came through
loud and clear: I needed to place more confidence in the power of
prayer than I did in the work of my hands. I needed to trust in
the goodness of God and rest in the assurance that my family and
I are in His care.
God offered a similar
message to Moses in Exodus 33:14. Confronted with enormous challenges,
Moses petitions God for guidance. In response, God says, "My Presence
will go with you, and I will give you rest" (NIV).
Lasting peace and comfort
only come from having Gods presence in our lives.
For many, however, rest
remains elusive. They dont know how to find peace amid mounting
financial pressures, job responsibilities and family obligations.
Many attempt to escape stress through television, food, alcohol
and other emotional sedatives. They pursue relief and relaxation
through diversions.
Believers, on the other
hand, can experience renewal by spending time with the Lord in prayer,
Bible reading and worship. We can rely on the promise given by Jesus
in John 14:27: "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do
not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled
and do not be afraid."
Daily prayer demonstrates
dependence on God and a hunger for His presence. But a daily routine
where prayer is an afterthought reflects a life that is out of Gods
control.
Want peace? Need rest?
Try turning off the tube and invite God to renew your spirit and
refresh your mind.
