Neighborhood watch

PLEASANTON, CALIF. — Over the last eight years, I’ve written 200 editorials for this magazine’s readership. But this week I’m writing an open letter to two people — my sister and her husband.

Dear Paul and Susan:

Thank you for opening your home to me on a recent ministry trip to California. I want you to know you preached to me through your lifestyle. I witnessed true friendship, generosity and humility in the few days we were together. I’ll never forget how we rode through your community and one neighbor after another stopped your vehicle to greet you or share a personal need.

I marveled at how aware you were of the problems your neighbors are facing — health conditions, family struggles, lost jobs and more. It’s apparent that you go beyond listening to their heartaches and praying for them; you also help many of them in a tangible way. There’s no telling how much you’ve given away to demonstrate the love of Christ.

In addition, it blessed me to see how many neighbors you have brought to church. You understand the importance of meeting both physical and spiritual needs.

Although you may not be widely known in your county, you have a Christlike reputation in your neighborhood. And although you may not have the largest bank account, you have stored up treasures in heaven. I’m proud of who you are. You’re not motivated by fame and power. You’re motivated by a love for Christ and a compassion for people. (See Mark 12:30,31.)

I pray more of us will follow your example and be content to work for Christ behind the scenes and leave a legacy of selfless commitment to our children.

Thank you for reminding an older brother what really matters in life.
