Sandra McMillan
Finding a 25th hour

There are days her feet hurt and her back aches from a full day of nursing her patients. Yet, at the end of each shift, Sandra McMillan is excited about her commute home. After wading through the congestion of traffic pulsing about Fayetteville, N.C., she turns southwest onto state highway NC 71 and counts the miles until she arrives home.

“Spending time with my family, that’s what excites me,” says McMillan, 36.

For the last nine years, however, McMillan has been taking a detour.

Enrolled as a nontraditional student, this full-time nurse, devoted wife and mother of three has been taking classes at Native American Bible College in Shannon, N.C., located on the way from work and minutes from her home.

“I started attending because I wanted to know more about the Bible,” McMillan says. What started as an interest in knowing more has become an appointment with a purpose for McMillan, who now plans to go into ministry after completing her pastoral ministry degree.

“What I have received from NABC is the confidence to share the Word with the world,” McMillan says.

For McMillan, attending NABC has been a good experience even with the challenges of her career. “The school has always been supportive of my schedule and the counselors take the time to advise me each step along the way,” she says.

McMillan now speaks to women’s groups and teaches classes in her church. “This is something that has become important in my life. I love teaching others,” she says.
