Have a Goal!

February 28, 2008

By Gary Rogers

“I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 3:14, NIV).

The road to success is paved with resolute decisions. It’s a joy to recognize college graduates achieving their goal regardless of age. I love it when someone stops by the church and asks me to come out and see their new car. I rejoice when someone smiling says, “I lost 45 pounds and feel better than I have in years!” I love when someone after months and weeks and days of counting down declares, “This was my last week! I am officially retired!”

A resolution helps you to aim at something. Resolutions let you declare to yourself and those closest to you a dream, a desire, a goal, an objective you would like to reach. This same concept applies to our relationship with the Lord.

I love it when someone tells me they just received the baptism in the Holy Spirit. I love when someone shares, “I just finished reading through my Bible, cover to cover!” I love to hear how the Lord ministers to people in their private devotional time or when families share with me how they have remained consistent in their devotional time together.

What are your spiritual resolutions? What would you like to accomplish in your relationship with the Lord? You will not accidentally read through your Bible in a year. You will not automatically get up early every day and spend time in prayer. It will not come naturally for you to hunger and thirst for more of the Holy Spirit’s influence in your life. Each of these comes only through a resolute decision to see it accomplished.

Please be encouraged to make life resolutions, but please do not forget to include the spiritual priorities of life.

I’m praying that God will pour out of His Spirit upon our church family in 2008. May this be our greatest year yet in building His kingdom. And I pray that you have a blessed and Holy Spirit-filled and God-directed year!
